The indoor smoking ban was established to protect individuals against the negative health effects of passive smoking or second-hand smoke (SHS). Phased in throughout the UK in 2006 and 2007, the indoor smoking ban outlawed tobacco smoking in most enclosed public spaces – including restaurants, pubs, bars, nightclubs, cinemas, and airports.

Most UK airports now offer travellers the use of designated outdoor smoking areas. However, the majority of airports in the UK do not permit smoking after passengers have entered the terminal building or have passed beyond the security checkpoints – and those that do allow this are typically smaller, regional airports.

As a rule, UK airports confine smoking, vaping and use of heated tobacco devices to their designated smoking areas. No distinction is drawn between smoking cigarettes, cigars and pipes or less harmful alternatives such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products.

Can you smoke after going through airport security?

Though in most UK airports smokers or users of alternative products aren’t permitted to smoke or use their devices ahead of their flight after entering the terminal building, there are some exceptions.

Below is a list of UK airports – and popular destination airports – with their current provisions in place regarding smoking, vaping and using heated tobacco products, before and after passing through the security checkpoints.

Manchester Airport

All three terminal buildings at Manchester Airport have designated outside areas which smokers, vapers and heated tobacco users can use before check-in and after arrivals. Terminal 1 also has a designated area after airport security.

Luton Airport

There are no designated areas beyond the security checkpoints at Luton Airport. For smokers, vapers and heated tobacco users there are dedicated areas outside the airport before heading into the terminal building.

Heathrow Airport

Smokers, vapers and heated tobacco users will have to use the designated areas outside the terminal buildings at Heathrow. Once through the security checkpoints, there are no such areas anywhere in the airside lounges.

Gatwick Airport

There are signposted designated areas located outside both of Gatwick Airport’s terminal buildings, but smoking, vaping and the use of heated tobacco products are prohibited beyond security.

Bristol Airport

For anyone wishing to smoke, vape or use heated tobacco products, there are two areas available after security. On the mezzanine floor there is a terrace which can be found attached to the bar. On the first floor there is also another area available, this can be found next to Gate 4.

Stansted Airport

There are designated areas outside Stansted’s terminal building. However, there are no designated areas available for smoking, vaping or the use of heated tobacco products beyond the security checkpoints.

Birmingham Airport

It is possible to smoke, vape or use heated tobacco products beyond the security checkpoints at Birmingham Airport. Once through security, follow signage to the designated area at the Meriden Bar in the Departures Lounge.

East Midlands Airport

Smokers, vapers and heated tobacco users are required to use the designated areas outside the terminal building. After passing through security, the use of e-cigarettes, vaping devices and heated tobacco products are strictly prohibited.

Liverpool Airport

It is possible to smoke, vape or use heated tobacco products beyond the security checkpoints at Liverpool Airport. The airport has a dedicated airside area on the lower level of Departures, just past the Kissing Gate Bar.

Leeds Bradford Airport

Smoking, vaping and use of heated tobacco products beyond airport security are permitted at Leeds Bradford Airport. There is a dedicated area located on the ground floor of the Departures area, this can be accessed from the first floor or ground floor. Travellers are asked to follow the directional signage and expect a £1 access charge.

Newcastle Airport

It is possible to smoke, vape and use heated tobacco products beyond the security checkpoints at Newcastle Airport. There is a well-signposted airside area available within Bar 11.

Glasgow Airport

There are no designated areas beyond the security checkpoints at Glasgow Airport. For smokers, vapers and heated tobacco users there are dedicated areas outside the airport before heading into the terminal building.

Edinburgh Airport

Smoking, vaping or use of heated tobacco devices are only permitted in designated areas outside Edinburgh’s terminal building. There are no designated areas available beyond the security checkpoints.

Dublin Airport

There are no designated areas beyond security in Dublin Airport’s Terminal 2, so those wishing to smoke, vape or use heated tobacco products will need to make use of the dedicated smoking areas outside the terminal building.

However, smoking, vaping or use of heated tobacco products beyond the security checkpoint is possible in Terminal 1. Once through security, passengers are advised to turn right and look for signposts for ‘Food Court 2’ – which is located upstairs and accessed either by the escalator or lift. Situated behind the Starbucks coffee shop is the Garden Terrace, where smoking, vaping and use of heated tobacco products is permitted.

Malaga Airport

Unlike at many Spanish airports, smoking, vaping or use of heated tobacco products are not permitted at Malaga Airport beyond security. Passengers are required to use the designated areas outside the terminal building.

Alicante Airport

Smoking, vaping or use of heated tobacco products at Alicante Airport are only permitted in designated areas outside the terminals. Any travellers wishing to smoke, vape or use heated tobacco products must use these facilities. There are no designated areas inside the terminal either landside or airside.

Tenerife Airport

There are designated areas situated outside the terminals of Tenerife Airport. There is also a terrace in the priority lounge, available to Business Class passengers or people with Lounge Access cards and Priority Passes. Travellers can pay €25.10 to access the 24-hour VIP Lounge.

Dubai Airport

Whilst smoking, vaping and use of heated tobacco products is strictly prohibited within the public areas of Dubai Airport’s three terminal buildings, for anyone wishing to smoke, vape or use heated tobacco products, there are several smoking lounges within all three of the terminals, before and after security.

Lisbon Airport

In Terminal 1, after security, there is a designated area next to gate N47.

For use of heated tobacco devices, Lisbon airport also has a smoke-free lounge, this can be found next to the IQOS store near gate 17.

In Terminal 2 however there is no smoking lounge or smoke-free lounge available.

Faro Airport

In Faro Airport smoking, vaping and the use of heated tobacco products are only permitted in designated areas outside of the airport.
