Are menthol cigarettes being banned in the UK?

Menthol cigarettes and other flavoured tobacco products have been banned in the UK since May 2020.​

Heated tobacco is exempt from the ban and so menthol TEREA will still be available to purchase both online and in stores.​

What is the menthol ban?​

The menthol ban comes from the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), banning all cigarettes with a “characterising flavour” other than tobacco. As menthol cigarettes are the most popular flavoured tobacco products, the new regulation has been dubbed the “menthol ban.”​

When will menthol cigarettes be banned?​

The menthol ban comes into place on 20th May 2020. You can still use menthol cigarettes after the ban, but you will not be able to purchase new ones.​

Where will menthol cigarettes be banned?​

Menthol and other flavoured cigarettes will be banned throughout the EU, including the UK. This new directive does not ban e-cigarettes or heated tobacco alternatives to smoking.​

How is the menthol ban being implemented?​

From 20th May 2020 it will be illegal for shops to stock or sell menthol cigarettes in the EU.​
