Why are menthol cigarettes banned in the UK?

Menthol cigarettes are now banned in the UK as of 20th May 2020. The EU Tobacco Products Directive has restricted the sale of all cigarettes with a “characterising flavour”. As menthol is typically the most common type of flavoured cigarette, the directive has been dubbed the “menthol ban”.

Heated tobacco is exempt from the ban and so is still available to purchase both online and in stores.
