Vaping in the Office - Can I Do It?

The indoor smoking ban came into force in the UK in 2007 and resulted in the ban on smoking in the workplace. Some places treat vaping like smoking, and as such, ban it outright.

If you’re working at the office all day, you might like to go outside for a quick vape during your break. Of course, we’ve not been able to smoke cigarettes in the office for a number of years now, but vaping is still potentially a grey area.

The rules around vaping in the workplace will vary from employer to employer, so there’s no straight answer here, but whatever the rules are, they should always be followed. Check with your employer to see where they stand on vaping before making assumptions.

Vaping Etiquette in the Office

If your employer does allow you to vape in the office, what do you need to be aware of when it comes to vaping etiquette in the office? Well, it might go without saying, as it’s basic good manners, but be careful where you exhale when vaping. Sometimes vapour might catch a breeze, and the last thing you want to do is make someone uncomfortable. It’s usually best to find a spot that has some good airflow and perhaps isn’t crowded with colleagues. Working from home obviously makes this far easier, but in an office environment, asking those around you will give you a fair idea.

Something else to bear in mind is the e-liquid you use. The office might not be the best place to try out a strong new flavour

Just because you might be able to vape indoors, it doesn’t mean that you need to. Vaping outside and away from entrances is generally considered the most courteous thing to do.

Alternative Vaping Locations at the Office

If you aren’t able to vape at your office, then it’s not the end of the world. Many workplaces offer designated smoking areas, and they’ll often be sheltered to protect from rain and other unpleasant weather conditions. Where smoking is permitted, vaping will be too, so you’ll be able to use your e-cigarette in smoking shelters.

Should your workplace not have a designated smoking area and you’re able to get away for a bit, consider venturing to a quiet spot outside that looks suitable for smokers and vapers. The UK has a number of amazing parks and outdoor spaces where you’ll be able to vape, and as long as you’re not doing it right next to someone, you should be fine.

Vaping on Zoom? Rules on the New Working Office

With remote working being quite popular now, vaping is something that may happen more often in or around the home environment. While you’ll be bound to your tenancy agreement if renting, you should be able to vape outside your front door or in an open area. Certain landlords may also not have a problem with you vaping indoors, so it’s best to get confirmation in that regard.

As far as business meetings are concerned, it could also be considered bad etiquette to pull your vape out while on a call or in a meeting. You perhaps wouldn’t do that in a face-to-face meeting, and while working remotely may feel less formal, you’re still completing your daily workday.

Hopefully, you should have a better idea about vaping in the workplace, but if you’d like to know more, you can check out another article about vaping at work right here.
