How Long Does an E-Cig Last?

Smoke-free Alternatives 19/06/2023

There are different types of vapes, or e-cigarette devices and the lifespan for these different vape types varies. Vapes come in two main forms, either as disposable or non-disposable. The latter is designed to be reusable with refillable e-liquid or replacement pods, whereas the former is not - once the e-liquid has been consumed and the battery is depleted.

Disposable Vape Lifespan

Disposable vapes come in closed systems where the battery and e-liquid usually cannot be restored. How long a disposable vape lasts may depend on the brand, the power capabilities, or the amount of e-liquid. Frequency of use can also matter. As the e-cigarette has a fixed capacity, the disposable vaping device of an adult user who vapes three times a day will, more than likely, last longer than one belonging to an adult user who vapes ten times a day.

Non-Disposable Vape Lifespan

Contrary to their disposable counterparts, non-disposable vapes – otherwise known as rechargeable and refillable vapes are, in many cases, designed to last longer. These vapes could work for up to a year and beyond. There are several types of rechargeable vapes such as mod systems, and they all provide a slightly different experience. A few examples can be found below:

Different Types of Devices

  1. Vape pens can last for some time, although they may need to be disassembled so that the coil can be replaced in certain cases. Coils are one component of a vape that can have a limited lifespan.
  2. Mod systems Modification is a pivotal feature of a mod system and can be configured with specific tuning. Devices should always be used in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
  3. Pod system vapes feature a rechargeable battery and a pod that contains e-liquid. The pod can be replaced once it has run empty.

How long a non-disposable vape lasts depends on several factors, which will vary across devices. From maintenance and cleaning to frequency of use – there are some points of guidance that an adult vaper may wish to consider in addition to manufacturer’s instructions.

  1. Ensure the vape is stored correctly within its case.
  2. Be prepared to replace certain parts over time.
  3. Monitor the device’s coil and cartridge and replace them accordingly where possible and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Go for a reliable, trustworthy e-cigarette. These are more likely to perform over a longer period. The quality of the vape matters.

Rechargeable vapes can be more cost-effective than their disposable counterparts. As they do not need to be regularly discarded and replaced, a long-term option is arguably better for the environment than a disposable.

It is also important to consider how long an e-liquid will last once opened, or rather, how long until it is no longer usable. Expiration dates will be clearly labelled on the packaging and should always be followed. Sometimes, an e-liquid might degrade before the expiration date. It is important to know the tell-tale signs of a spoiled e-liquid. Look out for a loss in flavor, vapor, and noticeable discoloration. Best practice is to discard an e-liquid that’s showing signs of degradation.

Alternatively, how long an e-liquid lasts before it runs out will depend on a number of factors. As we already know, how frequently something is used - in this case an e-liquid – often dictates how long it lasts. This means that there is no simple answer as it depends on the adult smoker or vaper and the circumstances surrounding their device. We recommend that users pay close attention to how much e-liquid is left to avoid disappointment. If a device features a clear or see-through case, it is easy to check the e-liquid’s volume and refill the e-liquid accordingly.
