If you’re looking for better alternatives to continued smoking, there are options available in the Philippines. Two of these options are vaping and heated tobacco. Below, we break down the differences between the two to help you decide which one is right for you.
Heated Tobacco
Heated tobacco products, like IQOS, offer an alternative to smoking that still uses real tobacco. The electronic device is used with HEETS™ tobacco sticks, offering real tobacco and no liquid. It provides a similar ritual and cigarette-like satisfaction—the closest alternative to a cigarette.
1. Heat versus burning
IQOS is an electronic device that heats, not burns, tobacco; therefore, it doesn’t produce cigarette smoke nor ash and has less smell compared to cigarettes. As there is no lit end, there is no risk of burning furniture or others around you.

Vaping
1. Uses e-liquids instead of tobacco
Unlike cigarettes and heated tobacco products, vapor products use e-liquid, e-juice, or vape juice. This liquid consists of ingredients such as VG (vegetable glycerin) and PG (propylene glycol) as well as flavorings and often nicotine or synthetic nicotine (i.e., nicotine not derived from real tobacco). E-liquids used with vaping devices don’t contain tobacco. Because of this, the taste and ritual are different from smoking, which may present a problem for some smokers.
2. No smoke, no ash, no fire
Like heated tobacco, e-cigarettes produce vapor instead of smoke. They also don’t produce ash.
3. Different smell
Although e-cigarettes don’t produce smoke, the vapor produced can have a strong smell depending on the e-liquid used. However, the smell dissipates quicker than the lingering smell of burnt tobacco from cigarettes.
IQOS vs. Vape
Both heated tobacco and vaping are better alternatives to smoking and use electronic devices. But the main difference between heated tobacco and vaping is what is used with the device. Heated tobacco products are an alternative to smoking which uses real tobacco, while e-cigarettes don’t contain tobacco and use liquids instead.
