Five Key Differences Between Burning and Heating Tobacco

IQOS 3 DUO in Stellar Blue held in hand

Published Dec 6, 2021

As Marc Firestone, Philip Morris International's (PMI) former President of External Affairs and General Counsel, stated, "People who say that 'tobacco is tobacco' are missing the point completely. It is a simple fact of life that not all tobacco products are the same."

There are 20.4 million IQOS users, 14.9 million of which (73%) have entirely switched to IQOS as an alternative to smoking. Could the five differences below be why they've stopped smoking?

Difference 1: IQOS has no fire and smoke

A cigarette burns tobacco at incredibly high temperatures of up to 900°C, generating smoke containing high levels of harmful chemicals. IQOS, on the other hand, uses technology to carefully heat the tobacco to a temperature of only up to 350°C. This not only releases real tobacco taste but also means there's no combustion. Or fire, or ash, or cigarette smoke.

Difference 2: No need for matches or lighters with IQOS

Say goodbye to searching for a lighter in the depths of your bag or stopping a stranger in their tracks.

With IQOS, you simply insert the tobacco stick into the IQOS holder. Turn on the electronically controlled heater, then draw on the IQOS HEETS™ stick to experience the real taste of heated tobacco. When the tobacco stick is finished, simply remove it, and throw it in the bin.

You can keep your IQOS holder recharged in the pocket charger. Then simply charge your heated tobacco device at night to have on-the-go power the next day—just like you do with your mobile and power bank.

Difference 3: IQOS uses advanced heating technology

Our scientists and experts have spent over ten years researching and developing Heat-Not- Burn IQOS. We use sophisticated electronics to heat specially designed tobacco heatsticks to release flavors and nicotine without burning.

Thanks to our IQOS HeatControlTM Technology, the tobacco sticks heat to the ideal temperature for up to 14 puffs (or approximately 6 minutes, whichever comes first).

Difference 4: No lit end with IQOS

Imagine the nightmare of a lit cigarette accidentally burning a mark on a recently purchased dining tablecloth / linen or a cinder falling onto your favorite trousers and leaving an unsightly hole!

Unlike cigarettes, IQOS doesn't have a lit end and, therefore, no risk of burning clothes or furniture.

Difference 5: IQOS leaves less of a lingering smell

IQOS doesn't generate cigarette smoke smell (the IQOS smell is quite different), and the tobacco vapor dissipates more quickly than cigarette smoke.

So, IQOS not only leaves less smell (compared to cigarettes) on clothes and fabrics but is also less likely to bother others around you, especially friends who'd rather avoid cigarette smoke and smell. IQOS is our most advanced smoke-free product.

If you want to try our heated tobacco products, you can purchase IQOS devices, HEETS™, and accessories from IQOS boutiques and pop-up stores in select malls, IQOS Official Lazada Store, and on the IQOS Philippines website. Meanwhile, HEETS™ are available in select 7-Eleven convenience stores in Metro Manila and Rizal and vape shops in malls and online.

Can You Smell IQOS?

If you smoke cigarettes, you know how unpleasant stale smoke smell can be.

Unfortunately, if you’re using traditional cigarettes, this is unavoidable. The existence of this smell has something to do with how cigarettes burn the chemicals in it.
