Thanks to science, adult smokers have been offered in recent years new innovative alternatives to classic cigarettes. Unlike classic cigarettes – which burn the tobacco and produce smoke – electronic alternatives produce only aerosol. What are the differences between tobacco heating devices and electronic cigarettes? What are their advantages and possible disadvantages?

The electronification of smoking has gained dramatic pace thanks to science and modern engineering. The lighter was replaced by the battery, the flame gave way to heating. More importantly, the smoke full of harmful particles was replaced with aerosol – a mixture of water, nicotine, and residue chemicals. First, electronic cigarettes appeared and just a little later devices designed to heat the tobacco.

Simpler electronic cigarettes, as we know them today, were first introduced in China in 2003. In just under two decades the vaporizers underwent intense development leading to many improvements. The principle remains the same – specially mixed liquid is heated and turned into aerosol using a heating coil. The liquid – often known as e-liquid – might or might not contain the nicotine. One of the main advantages of the e-liquid is the ability to easily combine it with any flavor. Users can either purchase a premixed liquid with flavor added by a manufacturer or mix his/her own. When compared with classic cigarettes or heated tobacco, the use of e-cigarettes is cheaper. Depending on the device type and e-liquids, one can save more than a thousand Czech crowns per month. Comparable consumption of classic cigarettes can cost almost four thousand Czech crowns and in the case of heated tobacco just over three thousand per month.

Tobacco heating devices reached adult smokers as an alternative to classic cigarettes for the first time in 2014. Unlike electronic cigarettes, they use natural tobacco. Their modern technology heats the tobacco to a temperature high enough to release aerosol containing the nicotine. At the same time, it prevents it from burning and eradicates the harmful combustion. Thanks to this, our IQOS devices produce 95% less harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes. *

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: It does not necessarily equal a 95% reduction in risk. IQOS is not risk-free. Only for use by adults.

When compared with electronic cigarettes, the main disadvantage of heated tobacco is its cost. The device is more expensive as well as the tobacco sticks which it uses. It delivers a true tobacco flavor and the whole ritual is closer to the one associated with a classic cigarette in comparison to the ritual delivered by vaping. In the Czech Republic, you can use electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco in restaurants and cafes. Other restrictions are still applicable to them, such as ban of use on board planes or trains, as well as inside public institutions.

Smokeless alternatives for technophobes

There are alternatives to smoking without electronics involved. Chewing tobacco and snuff are both well-known and both based on natural tobacco. Don’t confuse the snuff with snus, a Nordic specialty, popular mainly in Norway and Sweden. Sale of snus is – with exception of Sweden – banned in the European Union.

Still, you can come across this form, in which a small bag is placed between the upper lip and gum. The use of snus is not regulated by Brussels. In response to the regulation of snus, new forms of nicotine patches reached our market a few years ago. They don’t contain tobacco, only pharmaceutically extracted nicotine. However, it should be added that these alternatives to smoking are not without risk. They still deliver nicotine, which is an addictive substance.
